Take a trip back to the 80s, where striking print workers
were barricading the new headquarters of News International
in Wapping – a former dockyard now luxury warehouse
Michelle and Charles are having a party,
Spanish Practices notwithstanding.
Down the road at News International,
the pickets are bedded down for the night.
Its New Year’s Eve, and its fancy dress,
and someone out there is spoiling for a fight.
We stop at the in-laws, for a glass or two.
And someone says there’s a blockade out-there,
down in Docklands at Wapping.
So we have another glass and ponder,
the prospect of a sojourn out east.
Where black cabs aren’t stopping,
and something other than champagnes a popping.
Call the police there’s mad men abroad,
and in the end we stay.
Bringing in the new day,
not with a bang
and not with a whimper.
